Workplace Mental Health: Recognizing Burnout Before It's Too Late

Burnout isn't just feeling tired — it's a state of chronic workplace stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional effectiveness. Here's how to recognize and address it.

The Warning Signs

Watch for persistent fatigue that doesn't improve with rest, increased cynicism about your work, declining performance, difficulty concentrating, and withdrawal from colleagues. Physical symptoms like headaches, sleep problems, and frequent illness are also common.

Understand the Root Causes

Burnout typically stems from excessive workload, lack of control, insufficient recognition, poor work relationships, unfair treatment, or values misalignment. Identifying the specific cause helps you address it effectively.

Set Clear Boundaries

Define your work hours and stick to them. Turn off notifications after hours. Learn to say no to requests that push you past your capacity. Boundaries aren't selfish — they're essential.

Prioritize Recovery Activities

Exercise, sleep, social connections, and hobbies aren't luxuries — they're requirements for sustainable performance. Schedule them like you would any important meeting.

Talk to your manager about workload, expectations, and support. Many leaders want to help but don't realize their team members are struggling. Frame it as a conversation about sustainable performance.

Sometimes burnout is a signal that the role, company, or industry isn't right for you. If systemic issues can't be fixed, a career change may be the healthiest choice.

Build Sustainable Habits

Prevention is better than cure. Regular check-ins with yourself about energy levels, satisfaction, and stress help you catch problems early.
